Star Thunder needed a complete visual overhaul in order to appeal to a mass audience. I lead the overhaul project, which also included character and UI design. The old hardcore pixel style was changed to a bright, humorous and toylike 80’s scifi reimagining.
Together with the illustrator, we created a motley crew of space adventurers. At the same time, all the main UI (except battle gameplay) was redesigned.
Games are full of spaceships that all look the same. I wanted the spaceships to have character and connect with people. The new spaceship shapes were derived from real-world objects that communicate the characteristics of the alien species that owned them.
